What is SUP?

Stand Up Paddle Surfing or SUP is like Longboard/Malibu surfing except you stand for the whole session and use a paddle to get around. SUP boards are generally longer, thicker and wider than traditional longboards and made with a more advanced ‘sailboard’ construction that improves strength and durability while at the same time making the boards lighter.

Do you have to do it in waves?

No, SUP is a fun way to explore rivers and lakes and an excellent core body workout. As you are much higher off the water than a surfboard or surfski, visibility is far greater both above and below the water.

Open water distance paddling is a sport in it’s on right with numerous races held worldwide over various distances.

Can I buy a paddle and use my Longboard to SUP?

No, You will find your standard Mal too small for SUP. SUP boards are generally between 10’ and 12’6”. Most are between 28 and 32 inches wide and about 4-5 inches thick.  They have increased volume that make the board a lot more stable and easier to stand and paddle on.

What type of paddle do I need?

You will need a one bladed paddle with a t-bar at the top. The paddle should not be too long or short. An ideal paddle length would be when the paddle is standing vertically with the handle on the ground the base of the blade should be at eye level.

There are various constructions for paddles. The best is Carbon as it is the lightest and stiffest. An aluminium shaft paddle with a plastic blade is the cheaper option, although they flex a little they are still a great option especially when learning.

How much does it cost?

A new SUP board will range from $1600 to $2500. An aluminium paddle will cost from $60 where a carbon paddle will start from about $395.
